Damping sponge for spikes and anti-spins. Unlike conventional sponges, this one serves to absorb the energy of the incoming ball and reduce its speed. This means that the thicker the sponge, the weaker the bounce. This is in contrast to conventional sponges, where the bounce increases with thickness.
The sponge is lightweight (6,5 g at a thickness of 1.8 mm), so there is practically no difference in weight between thick and thin sponges.
